It all began on an ordinary day with friends, when a good mutual friend happened to show me her picture on Instagram. One look, and I knew I couldn’t just scroll past. That very same day, I reached out to her.
After a week of non-stop chatting, I knew text messages weren’t going to be enough. I booked a trip to Jakarta to meet her in person for the very first time. Walking into that first meeting, my first thought was, “She’s absolutely stunning.” Her outgoing energy immediately filled the room. I was secretly worried things might get awkward, but the conversation just flowed effortlessly. We had the most incredible time.
From that moment on, long distance couldn’t keep us apart. I made it a point to fly to Jakarta every single month—sometimes even twice a month—just to spend time with her.
Three months in, on New Year’s Eve, everything felt so right. I decided to take a leap of faith and tell her how I truly felt. To my surprise, she turned me down. I spent a couple of days feeling pretty down, but I knew in my heart she was worth it, so I chose not to give up.
Two months later, Valentine’s Day arrived. I decided this would be my final attempt—if it was a yes, it would be a new beginning; if it was a no, I would respect her decision and step back. But right in the middle of our dinner, before I could even say a word, she handed me a letter. Reading it, I found out she felt the exact same way and was ready to take our next step together.
Our journey hasn’t always been seamless. We have our fair share of differences, but rather than pulling us apart, those differences taught us how to grow together. We learned that love isn’t about being identical, but about appreciating the beauty of who we are together.
Today, after every flight, every letter, and every moment shared, I am deeply grateful to stand beside her—the one I get to love for the rest of my life.
